The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) will launch a satellite to monitor methane with incredible precision.
Steven Hamburg, a climate scientist at EDF said,
Methane is such a potent greenhouse gas… The gas actually accounts for more than one quarter of the additional warming that we experience today… Methane leaks from oil and gas operations. Farms also generate methane as do natural wetlands.
‘The satellite could detect two types of methane emissions: biogenic (sources like wetlands, landfills and agriculture) and thermogenic (encompassing geologic seepage, activities associated with the oil and gas supply chain or coal mines).’
To what end will this satellite be used? Call me cynical but it sounds like a very expensive way to tax people or countries for their contribution of Methane. There are so many schools of thought out there on whether or not the atmosphere is safe or is crumbling that I have no idea who to believe. All I know is that weather is changing because we’re coming to the end of an age. We only came out of the last Ice Age 11,700 years ago and that one single giant asteroid sent Britain and parts of Europe into the Dark Ages for about 150-250 years.
